Appearance Modification Statement
The Prince William County Police Department has a standing policy in reference to body art and professional appearance. The Department defines body art as any body adornment or alteration implemented through the following techniques, which include but are not limited to: body piercing, tattooing, branding and mutilation. The policy does not include practices that are considered medical procedures by a state medical board.
The Department does not accept any applicants with body art on the head, face, neck, ears, scalp, hands, or fingers. However, a wedding ring tattoo on the left ring finger no wider than ½ inch is allowed. The Department may disqualify applicants who have inappropriate, offensive, or excessive body art. The Department defines excessive body art as more than four (4) visible body art on arms and/or legs when wearing short sleeves and short pants. Additionally, there may be no more than two (2) visible body art per limb and no larger than the wearer’s hand.

General Definition of Work, Typical tasks, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
Performs responsible protective service work in the police department; does related work as required.The work involves an element of personal danger. Work is performed under regular supervision.
On an assigned shift, operates a patrol car to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order; Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints; serves warrants and make arrests; Testifies in court; Provides police escorts; Directs traffic; Performs special assignment of booking or desk officer; Reports unsafe conditions existing in street or other public facilities; Assists with criminal investigations by presenting evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, prepares property and evidence duties, recording and issuing of evidence in court cases; May be assigned to Police Academy as Instructor; Prepares detailed reports.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Some knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; some knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Police Department; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; ability to develop skill in the use of firearms and the operation of motor vehicles; possession of physical agility and endurance.
Education and Experience
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school. Graduation from a community college in social science or police science is desirable.
