Under general direction, employs the use of evidence-based policing theory to evaluate policing and crime prevention strategies; reviews department procedures and policies and compares them to the available research evidence; evaluates the efficacy of several department initiatives; and studies the relationship of place on crime and crime prevention efforts.

THIS POSITION IS A GRANT-FUNDED POSITION.

First set of applications will be reviewed on August 20, 2009. 

 Examples of Duties:

  • Conducts research projects requiring application of advanced research methods and techniques and a high degree of creativity and scientific judgment

  • Develops studies through multiple phases in which a problem of considerable scope and complexity is undertaken and critical research problems are solved

  • Identifies critical factors and determines feasible lines of approach for various research problems

  • Plans and directs studies to completion involving selection of personnel, facilities, and subjects, the collection and analysis of data, documentation of results, etc. 

  • Coordinates plans with researchers and scientists in related fields at academic institutions and criminal justice agencies

  • Develops, validates, and standardizes methods and techniques which represent significant contributions to the scientific field, and clears the way for important changes in research which ultimately result in optimal products and processes

  • Interprets data in light of original hypotheses and new information resulting from research

  • Presents scientific findings at professional meetings

  • Performs specialized and fundamental research assignments

  • Projects are designed to develop and improve the utilization, benefits, and capabilities of Redlands Police Department programs

  • Sets priorities, determines methodologies, selects techniques and approaches to be utilitized in statistical analysis, identifies and resolves problem areas, and conducts field research interviews

  • Develops principles, criteria and data applicable to each specialized research area; evaluates trends; and, continually assesses validity and quality on ongoing research efforts in the field

  • Remains abreast of advances within the criminal justice and behavioral science fields and evaluates applicability and/or impact on law enforcement and training programs

  • Plans and executes a variety of comprehensive statistical and criminological analyses, integrating outside statistics and research regarding crime/community issues with other data to determine issues to be examined or further areas for future study

  • Makes recommendations to superiors regarding initiation, extension, or abandonment of various research efforts accordingly

  • Keeps the Redlands Police Department apprised of state-of-the-art research methodologies and techniques with regard to analysis, interpretation, application of research data, etc.

 Typical Qualifications:

Education:  MA/MS in Criminology, Behavioral Sciences, Sociology, or a related discipline with emphasis on criminology.  PhD highly desirable.

Experience:  Past research in criminology is desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:  Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license.

 Supplemental Information:

Essential functions require the following physical abilities and work environment:

  • Ability to work in a research environment involving the advanced studies of the behavioral sciences of crime and violence, which is sometimes further complicated by the graphic and often disturbing nature of the materials and evidence being analyzed
  • Ability to work outside
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations
