Monthly Salary Range effective 7-1-09: $3,995.45 - $4,200.45 - $4,415.70 - $4,641.20 - $4,879.00 - $5,129.10

The City of Stockton is currently recruiting for the position of Police Telecommunicator II. This recruitment is being conducted as an Open/Promotional recruitment. Current full-time City of Stockton employees may apply for this position as a promotional opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on a promotional list. All other candidates may apply for this position as an open competitive opportunity and successful candidates will be placed on an open list. The appointing authority will have the option of requesting names from the promotional list, the open list or a combination of both.

Incumbents in this position are covered under Civil Service and are represented by the Stockton City Employees' Association (SCEA).

Under general supervision, receives 911 system emergency and non-emergency calls and dispatches assignments to established police procedures; operates various telecommunications center equipment; performs related work as assigned.

 CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

Police Telecommunicator II is the fully experienced class in this series, competent to perform telecommunications and dispatch work within established guidelines. Responsibilities include handling inquiries from irate citizens and evaluating and assisting the Police Telecommunicator III in training new staff. This class is distinguished from Police Telecommunicator III in that the latter performs more complex telecommunications and dispatch work and provides training for new staff.
 

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education:

Possession of a high school diploma or GED.

Experience:
Two years of experience in public safety dispatching at a level equivalent to the City of Stockton's Police Telecommunicator I.

Special Certificate:
To be considered eligible as a Lateral-Entry Police Telecommunicator, an applicant must (i) be currently, or within the past twelve (12) months, employed as a Telecommunicator with a public agency or a similar situation or equivalent as determined by the City; (ii) completed a probationary period as a Telecommunicator or equivalent position with another public agency or a similar situation; (iii) possess a current California P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate (A copy of the certificate must be faxed to Human Resources within 10 days of filing your application.); AND (iv) have experience in a public safety dispatch system.

Typing Certificate:
Must submit a signed and dated copy of a valid Typing Proficiency Certificate, two years old or less, for at least 40 NET words per minute at time of application. The Typing Proficiency Certificate must specify the total number of gross words per minute typed, number of typing errors, and the net typing speed for a 5-minute timed evaluation. The Typing Proficiency Certificate must be an unaltered copy from a government agency, business college, public school, or other recognized agency that regularly tests and issues certificates of typing skills, and must be on their official letterhead.

Other Requirements:
Must be able to pass a background investigation. Must be willing to work evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts on a rotation basis. Must be willing to be called back or held over to maintain minimum staffing levels.
