The purpose of the class is to execute beginning level police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. The class is responsible for patrolling the City and responding to citizen calls. The class works according to set procedures under general supervision. |

Example of Duties: |
|
The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority
of the time spent working in this class. Management may
assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the
class as necessary. Patrols assigned City beat for traffic
and other violations using a variety of transportation
including patrol car, motorcycle, bicycle, and horse; makes
traffic stops and intervenes in other criminal activity.
Conducts general field services, including monitoring police
radio and responding to citizen calls and complaints,
obtaining and issuing warrants, interviewing suspects and
witnesses, and following-up with victims. Interacts with
city and community agencies and groups; responds to citizen
calls, complaints, requests for information, etc.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses: |
|
Requires a minimum of a high school or General Education Diploma (GED). Candidates must, pass an initial physical agility and written test, successfully complete a thorough background investigation and formal police academy training. Candidate must be 21 years of age at the time of graduation from the Police training academy. Valid Virginia driver's license upon graduation from the Police training academy. |
