Minimum Qualifications:
1. 21 years old at the time of hire. 20 ½ years old on the date of the
written test.
2. Graduation from a U.S. high school, G.E.D. or equivalent from a U.S.
institution, or a California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE)
certificate is required. A two or four year college degree from an
accredited U.S. or foreign institution may be substituted for the high
school requirements.
3. United States citizen, or have applied for citizenship.
Job Description:
As a sworn member of the Los Angeles Police Department, a Police Officer
maintains order, enforces laws and ordinances, and protects life and
property; issues citations, makes arrests, prepares reports, and
provides information to the public and departmental units; works with
neighborhood associations and community members as a planner, community
organizer, problem solver and information link; and does related work.

Salary:
At
all levels of service, LAPD Officers earn competitive salaries. There
are regular raises and opportunities for promotion. In addition,
Officers have opportunities to earn bonuses based on special skills such
as fluency in a foreign language or hazard pay for specialized
assignments.
Base
Salary
The starting base salary for high school graduates is $56,522. If you
have at least 60 college units, with an overall GPA of 2.0 or better,
you will start at $58,798. If you have a BA or BS (four year) degree you
will start at $61,095.
Specialized Assignments
There are over 250 different jobs in the LAPD. Some of them, like
traffic investigator are done by hundreds of Officers, but then there
are also specialized jobs, like SWAT, motorcycle Officers, horseback
Officers, divers, fixed-wing pilots, helicopter pilots, public
information officers, K-9 units, and bike Officers. Most of these
require specialized training, and if you are selected, you are paid to
be trained.
