
The Ohio
State Highway Patrol is a statewide law enforcement agency charged with
the responsibility of enforcing traffic and criminal laws on public
roadways and on state-owned or leased property within Ohio. State
Troopers shall fulfill all duties within the authority and jurisdiction
of the Ohio State Highway Patrol as prescribed in Ohio Revised Code (ORC)
Chapter 5503. Troopers provide service to the public 24 hours a day, 7
days a week, 365 days a year and must be available in case of an
emergency.
Those selected for training will be required to live at the Academy with
room and board furnished. While at the Academy, you will receive
extensive training in military demeanor, Ohio Laws and statutes,
misdemeanor and felony arrest techniques, human relations, crash
investigation, firearms and ballistics, testifying in court, narcotics,
physical investigation, defensive driving and patrol techniques, and
civil disorders.
Trooper’s responsibilities include the following:
1. Investigate and report motor vehicle crashes on roads and highways
outside of municipal corporations.
2. Render assistance to motorists in need.
3. Enforce laws related to the operation and use of vehicles on the
highway.
4. Enforce laws related to registration and licensing of motor
vehicles.
5. Enforce and prevent violations of laws related to the size, weight,
and speed of commercial motor vehicles.
6. Regulate movement of traffic on the roads and highways.
7. Enforce the criminal laws in state institutions and on property
owned or leased by the State of Ohio.
8. Investigate and report violations of laws related to the collection
of excise taxes and motor vehicle fuels.
9. Assume overall responsibility for crash and crime scenes assigned,
and coordinate the activities of responding emergency personnel unless
relieved by a Division Supervisor.
10. Educate the public on the value of highway safety by handling speech
details, driver education classes, and other special details.

Minimum Qualifications
Formal education in arithmetic that includes fractions, decimals and
percentages; formal education in reading and writing English vocabulary;
valid driver’s license; probationary period is one year. – OR -
Possession of certificate having successfully completed approved basic
peace officer training program or completion of 20 years active duty as
peace officer per Section 109.78 (D) of ORC for Mental Retardation,
Developmental Disabilities and Mental Health. Probationary period is one
year.
Note: Applicant must be able to successfully perform Ohio Peace Officer
Basic Training Program (OPOTC) Fitness Testing Entry Standards for New
Recruits.
